HORIZONS HISTORY

Serving the young people of South Arkansas
Horizons was founded as a local council of Camp Fire girls in 1961. Since then the organization has gone through several periods of transition including the name change to Camp Fire El Dorado. Most recently, a disaffiliation from Camp Fire National and rebranding has taken place to enable the organization to better use its funds and focus on enhancing the lives of the young people in South Arkansas through education and service opportunities.
While its name is changing, its mission and programs remain the same—providing engaging, high-quality experiences that inspire leadership, service, and personal growth.
Now, as Horizons, the organization has the opportunity to focus 100% of its resources, funding, and energy on the specific needs of youth and families in Union County. This transition allows Horizons to be even more responsive to local challenges, ensuring that every dollar and every effort directly benefits the local community. The organization will continue its legacy of helping young people develop confidence, skills, and a sense of belonging through hands-on learning, leadership training, outdoor adventure, and community service.
Today, Horizons serves approximately 750 young people in Union County through club programs, outreach services, afterschool programs, outdoor workshops, day camp and various special events.
A Tradition of Quality Programs
Horizons has a tradition of providing quality programs to the young people of South Arkansas. The organization began as a way to develop leadership skills and learn outdoor and homemaking responsibilities in small group settings. It has since evolved into an organization where young people have the opportunity to interact with adults and other young people in a safe, fun environment that allows them to develop personal skills and lifelong relationships with others in the group while focusing on serving the community. Horizons is committed to fostering growth, promoting education, encouraging outreach, establishing lifelong friendships, and building a strong sense of community. We accomplish this through club programs, summer day camp, enrichment classes, outreach programs and special events.
